8hands Featured Flickr Stream: Know Hope

I must admit, I haven't been on know hope's (aka this is limbo) Flickr stream for a while. And I have another confession: I meant to write about Gaia {MSG}, a fellow street artist from the States, but a link of one of their collabs made me realize that his review will have to wait.

It all started for me with his tag. Then I started seeing paste-ups and little sayings on cardboard tied to poles and benches. But now, his work has gone 3-D and it's like nothing I've ever seen. The man in the striped shirt is out, taping tvs to trees and throwing up light bulbs. And thanks to the wonders of flickr, we can all share in the wealth, even viewing know hope's recent sojourn to Bethlehem, where he left his mark, after (probably) visiting Banksy's Santa's Ghetto installation. And for those who want a little piece of limbo in their homes, know hope created a book called "just because you are listening (dedications to anyone who misses anything)" that you can acquire through him here. Enjoy...

8hands Featured Flickr Stream: The Holgasnake

Last year The Holgasnake gave me my first holga. For about a month it sat on my shelf. It had been years since I had touched a film camera, and my last digital camera was so bad, that I had stopped taking pictures all together. And then one day Ms. Holgasnake came over, took the holga out, showed me how to load film, post on flickr, and pushed me off the diving board into a whole new life. Seriously.

The Holgasnake is also one of my favorite photographers. She has this uncanny ability to give the most banal object a haunting beauty. Her street shots of Los Angeles are like no other and she is a master of the double exposure. We can all learn a lot from The Holgasnake, I know I have.

8hands Featured Heads-Up: Xiu Xiu's New Album

Ok, I'm not gonna write a 10 million words post just to explain why Xiu Xiu is one of the best bands in the world. We all know that Jamie Stewart is a genius, we all remember the brilliant former album, "The Air Force".

All I'm about to do is to let you people know – the ones who somehow missed it – that Xiu Xiu will be back with a new album by the end of the month. The shiny album will be called "Women as Lovers" and the first single, "I Do What I Want When I Want" is already out there and as you probably assumed, is beautiful.

You can download the full song here or just watch the official video for it, which is just my idea of art. Spectacular!

Edit: The all-mighty Alice just told me that Xiu Xiu are letting us stream-listen their whole new album in their MySpace page. Double SWEEEET!

8hands Featured Concert Shots: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Here’s a little treat to start off your 2008 right. The legendary Black Rebel Motorcycle Club came into town, and I was lucky enough to get to shoot them. The evening started with an in store appearance and ended with a mind blowing show. Total gentlemen through and through. Enjoy. (p.s. please excuse my Peter Hayes obsession - i couldn't take my eyes off him all night...)

Don't get me wrong. I love to peak into the cobrasnake, misshapes (in its glory), dirty dirty dancing, and last night's party to see what's up like the rest of 'em. But I'm a lo-fi girl in a digital age, and I have to give props to robin_bharaj.

He's been going around London, documenting the current (and let's just say it now for the record, historic) nightlife in glorious medium format. We're bombarded daily with 1000s of digi shots of any kind of party imaginable (hello, facebook!). But, shot on film with a dope camera and perfect studio-like lighting, these shots look almost surreal. Overall, a much welcome development to the party picture genre...Enjoy.
